15 September is the International Day of Democracy and once again V-Dem celebrates it with our graph of the week. This year’s chosen theme is “Participation”, stressing that democracy is about the people, and demands constant dialogue between people and their governments. The Interactive Map tool shows the levels of democratic participation of societies around the world in 2018.

The V-Dem Participatory Democracy Index measures to what extent the ideal of participatory democracy is achieved, referring to the participation of society in all political processes, electoral and non-electoral. The scale is from 0 to 1, from low to high levels of participatory democracy. The Interactive Map shows that Africa and Asia generally have lower levels of participatory democracy when compared to levels found in Europe and North and South America. Switzerland and Uruguay currently have the highest scores.
