Presidential Elections in Tunisia

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi died in July this year, prompting early elections on 15 September. As a result, elections for the president will take place beforethe 06 October parliamentary elections. This brings about political implications for the parties running as the presidential elections may give the winning party a big boost. This week, we use V-Dem’s Country Graph tool, to look into the control between parties in Tunisia.
The National Party Control Indicator captures the extent of party control in the national legislature and executive. It is measured from 0 to 2, where 0 indicates unified coalition control by a single multi-party coalition, 1 indicates different parties control the executive and legislature, and 2 indicates unified party control by single party. The graph shows that Tunisia shifted from unified party control to unified coalition control in 2011 following the Arab Spring. However, the graph also depicts an upward trend toward divided party control in 2018. The nature and results of the upcoming elections will determine whether Tunisia maintains its coalition-style politics or moves toward divided government in the coming years.
