The Regional Centers aims to further enhance regional research and the involvement of regional scholars in the V-Dem Project.

Balkans

The V-Dem Regional Center for Balkans is led by Director Shpetim Gashi, and tracks and measures democratic progress in ten countries in the region.

The V-Dem Regional Center for Central Asia was founded in October 2016 at the American University of Central Asia to study dynamics of regime change and post-soviet transformation in Central Asia and other parts of the post-soviet space.

The V-Dem Regional Center for East Asia is hosted at Keio University in Tokyo and led by Director Yuko Kasuya.

Eastern Europe and Russia

The V-Dem Regional Center for Eastern Europe and Russia was founded in May 2015 as the first regional research center within the worldwide V-Dem network. The Center is supported by a Personal Research Grant (PUT) awarded by the Estonian Research Council to Director Vello Pettai.

The V-Dem Regional Center in North America supports research projects using V-Dem data and hosts speakers and occasional conferences and workshops. This Regional Center cooperates closely with the Kellogg Institute's Democratization Theory Research Cluster.

The V-Dem Regional Center for Southern Africa aims to develop research on the causes and consequences of democratisation and multi-party politics in Southern Africa, which includes the following countries: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique and South Africa.

The V-Dem Regional Center for Southern Europe was founded in March 2016. It aims to develop research on the causes and consequences of democratization in Southern Europe, which includes the countries of Andorra, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, and Cyprus.
