This week’s graph depicts developments in the general, liberal component and two of its subcomponents (freedom from torture and freedom from political killings). With V-Dem’s drill-down feature you can toggle on and off the various components to get a grasp of what precisely goes into this composite score (just click on components listed to the right to toggle on/off). The historical trajectory of Argentina shows a lot of fluctuations in the respect for liberal rights in general as it is also reflected in the more specific graphs for violent repression in the form of torture and politically motivated killings. The period of the “Dirty War” stands out as the years with the most violent repression in Argentine political history since 1900.
