In addition to the translated V-Dem Institute Democracy Report 2025, the Portuguese version contains a new section, taking a closer look at the democratic development in the Portuguese-speaking countries across the world.
No less than 17 new articles look into the wide range of regimes, from countries with democratic political institutions with free and fair elections and extensive civil liberties, to autocratic regimes, where democratic institutions are weak and often violated.
Deep political and social transformations have occurred in the Portuguese-speaking world since the 1970s, starting with the revolution of April 25, 1974 in Portugal and ending with the democratic transition of Timor-Leste in the 2000s. In what ways have the aspirations for civic and political freedom, as well as socio-economic equality, been fulfilled? And how are the democracies in the Lusophone world affected by the recent global wave of autocratization?
The Portuguese version of the Democracy Report 2025 is brought to you by the V-Dem Regional Center Southern Europe, and CEI-Iscte, University Institute of Lisbon.
