Sentry, an American investigative and policy organization specializing on East and Central Africa, recently published a corruption report on South Sudan. The findings reveal how powerful political and military elites have managed to stay in power and accumulate personal wealth in one of the poorest countries in the world. This week’s V-Dem graph highlights the Political Corruption index that includes measures of six distinct types of corruption distinguishing between executive, legislative and judicial corruption. Higher levels on this index indicate higher levels of corruption.

The graph illustrates the levels of political corruption in South Sudan, Sudan, and Africa as a whole. Political corruption in Sudan and South Sudan have always been higher than the Africa average. In 2016, the level of political corruption in Sudan dropped, approaching the average rate in Africa, while corruption is increasing in South Sudan.
