Electoral democracy and egalitarianism

In the graph below one indicator related to electoral democracy (clean elections) and one connected to egalitarianism (educational equality) are included. When looking at a country like India, it becomes evident that the two aspects do not necessarily follow parallel trajectories. While elections became less clean in the early 1970s, educational quality actually increased in the same period. Hence, even if elections are fairly free and fair, inequalities still remain in terms of citizens not being able to exercise their basic rights due to high quality basic education not being guaranteed to all.
