8th March marks International Women’s Day. Advancing gender equality is one of the greatest global challenges today. This week’s graph reveals that almost all Afghan women's rights have been eradicated after the Taliban’s takeover in 2021.

While Afghan men’s rights are also reduced under the Taliban’s control, women’s rights are most drastically affected. Access to justice and freedom of movement have both plunged to absolute zero. All the achievements from the legal reform since 2001 have relapsed, and former female professionals are now in exile. Women are not allowed to go out alone, attend schools, and work. Child marriage and freedom from forced labor, which had improved in the past decade, is now reverting to a form of modern slavery. Property rights are expected to be redenied, and widows and women leading households are now most at risk.
