According to the latest V-Dem’s Democracy Report, Fiji is one of top-10 democratizing countries over the last decade. How is media freedom faring? Today’s Graph of the Week looks at two key aspects over two decades.

Government efforts at censorship reached almost their worst point after the 2006 coup but censorship is improving steadily as Fiji has re-democratizatized in the last five years. In contrast, media self-censorship on politically sensitive issues is still getting worse. One of the reasons for this finding is a strict media regulation law creating incentives for journalists and editors to censor their reporting. One of the key actions that could help improve the country’s media freedom is the liberalization of existing media laws.
