Corruption is a significant problem in Southeast Asia. This Graph of the Week shows regional changes in the level of public sector corruption between 2010-2020.

Indonesia stands out with a significant recent decline. This increase in corruption coincides with the persistent government effort to weaken the country’s anti-corruption body, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The former president Megawati attempted to restrain the KPK through legal revisions. In 2019, the House of Representatives eventually passed a controversial revision weakening KPK’s independence.
