President Adama Barrow was reelected in The Gambia on December 4, 2021. This week’s graph illustrates the positive change in the country’s regime following his coming to power in 2016, making Gambia one of the world’s top 10 democratizers in the 2022 Democracy Report.
The previous president had been in power for 22 years and used autocratic methods such as killing critics. After Barrow’s first election in 2016, the freedom from political killings rating soared. Gambia’s election ratings are also continuing on the upward trend that began in 2016 when Barrow first came to power. Although the opposition claimed Barrow’s reelection was unfair, international observers from the EU, ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), and Commonwealth praised the transparency of the procedure.
